| Wheat Ridge - homes with mountain and prairie beauty |
Wheat Ridge (always spelled as two distinct words!) is one of several small suburban cities ringing metro Denver to the northwest. As the name implies, Wheat Ridge began as a rural community with fertile soils and an abundance of water which, until World War II, provided the majority of fresh produce to Denver. Later, carnation production became a major industry and several carnation greenhouses still exist today in the northwest metro area.
As the community evolved, commercial wheat production on the ridges gave way to suburban residential developments with grand views of the Front Range.
Wheat Ridge incorporated as a city in 1969 and today has a population of 31,000. An interesting mix of old and new, Wheat Ridge is generally a residential community. It features five retail centers and more than 20 parks. Extensive trail systems connect Wheat Ridge to
Denver and surrounding areas as well as the mountains and other activities.
